What is Royalty Splits, and how does it work?

Our Royalty Split feature let you share your earnings with collaborators, or anyone else who should get a piece of the pie. To set up splits, you need a Record Union account and at least one release distributed through us. You can add splits as soon as your release is uploaded.

How it works

When you add someone to a split, they’ll get an email inviting them to share royalties for the track or release you’ve chosen. You can set up splits on a whole release or on individual tracks, and each track can have its own split. A split on a track only applies to that track in that specific release.

How royalties are divided

Streams and downloads are treated the same way, so all royalties are paid out according to your split settings. For splits set up on a whole release, download revenue is divided equally between everyone in the split.

When splits take effect

New splits apply from the next royalty report. We report royalties with a three-month delay, so a split set up in August applies to the August report, which covers royalties earned in May.

Temporary pause during reporting

To keep reporting accurate, split management is unavailable for part of the day when we run royalty reporting at the end of each month. You’ll be able to manage splits again later that same day.

Who can manage splits?

Splits can only be managed from the workspace the release belongs to, and you'll need to be an Owner or Admin of that workspace to make changes. If you're a royalty split receiver looking to make changes, please contact the person who uploaded the release.

ℹ️ If you are on the old experience splits can only be managed by the release owner (i.e. by the account the release was uploaded from).

I’ve sent an invite for royalty splits but my collaborator hasn't responded yet, what happens now?

When an invitation has been sent, your collaborator has 30 days to accept it. If they haven’t accepted within that time frame, their invitation expires, and the only way they can take part in the split is if they get sent another invitation.

Until an invitation has been accepted, you (the release manager workspace) will keep the royalty share.

What happens if a collaborator declines the offered royalty share?

If they decline, the royalty share you offered will revert back to you (the release manager workspace).

What happens if I cancel my subscription or take the release down?

If you cancel your subscription or take a release down, the splits will stay active until your last royalty payout, but you won’t be able to make any changes to the split settings. To be able to edit splits again, all you need to do is reactivate your subscription.

If the release has been taken down, the only way to get the splits up again is to re-upload the release and set up the splits again (as a taken-down action is irreversible).
